A must-read tips for the PLAB test
Once you take the decision to sit the PLAB test to be able to fully register as a doctor in the UK you really have to know about those points and I hope it can help you for an easy pass
The IELETS
The minimum score to be eligible to sit PLAB 1 has been recently raised to be a minimum of 7 as an overall score with a minimum of 7 in each of the reading writing , listening and speaking modules
I personally didn't sit the IELETS before the PLAB 1 because I've noticed that there's a twist in their rules on the GMC website, I contacted them and finally managed to be exempted from it. And here's the tip
It's stated in GMC website that any fresh graduate who apply to sit the PLAB 1 within one year of his graduation shall be exempted from sitting the IELETS provided that he graduated from a university at
which English is the main language of instruction and examination
So I contacted the GMC, they replied they need a certificate from my faculty with this. I finally could sign a certificate with what they needed from my dean and with my graduation certificate sent to them via post. In about 2 weeks, they contacted me via my GMC account "you have to make one now as it's the easiest and the fastest way to contact them" and told me now you are eligible to sit the PLAB 1 and you can book it online. And you are given 2 years from your graduation once you sent them this certificate to sit PLAB
I guess this twist is really cheesy as I made it and no one could oppose me in the GMC as these are the rules and I personally told it to many of my colleagues who just made the certificate just in case they might apply for the PLAB in the future
Here's the link from GMC website with the exemption rules and other rules for EU and British passport holders

Approaching the PLAB 1
First of all the exam is neither too easy nor too hard. You just need to be well prepared for it and acing it is combination of well preparation and time management inside the exam
Here are the sources and the material you need it for your preparation
A comprehensive reading of Oxford handbook of clinical medicine (for Internal medicine, General surgery and Emergency medicine)
A comprehensive reading of Oxford handbook of clinical specialties (for Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Obs & Gyne, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Orthopedics).. I personally was stressing much on Psychiatry and Dermatology from there as it's really important and it's a good source for all the exam questions.. and the others I read them lightly and was revising my previous notes from college
Practice EMQ as much as you can and it'll be really helpful for your performance to practice against time with your stopwatch.. Even 3 months before the exam, to get used to solve fast and to the stress of the exam
The most recommended books are
RXPG first aid

Practice with the past papers and it's really important and it makes you get used to the real exam questions and about 20% of the exam is a repeat from the past papers. Exactly the same questions with no change so it'll save you a lot of time in the exam when you approach those as once you find one you do it blindly
But always beware of faults in the answers when you practice them and you can check the answers online or form any references if you suspect any. As these all past questions are gathered by people who sat the exam and write it in some forums
I shall attach a compressed file with past papers from 2001 till 2007 and you might find the rest in RXPGonline.com forums in PLAB1 section
Some forums like RXPGonline.com are really helpful as you can find a lot of study partners for the same exams with study groups to share your experiences
I've a file that works on the office application OneNote. It has my personal checklist of the must read topics in the all subjects with some notes I encountered during EMQ solving. It might help a lot to know what exactly you need to study and to make a plan for your studying

I think 3-4 months before the exam is really enough. And you shall start with reading both OHCM and OHCS but it'll be good to practice EMQs in parallel with reading. So you can get into the rhythm of the exam
Few weeks before the exam you might need to practice and a fast reading of the OHCM and OHCS can be done one week before it but don't exhaust yourself in the few days before the exam. You really need to have a clear mind with a good sleep to prepare to ace it. Remember 50% is all about TIME MANAGEMENT and the first cause of failing it is you can't finish in time leaving 30-40 questions unanswered
Get a stopwatch with you in the exam so you can always how you are doing after one hour and two hours and either to race up your rhythm or stay calm. However always stay calm and if any question would take more than 54 sec "200 Q in 180 mins", just tick it with anything and forget about it. Save your time for easy questions you can know well but you might loose them if you ran out of time
The cut off to pass depends on each exams but usually around 115-130
And best of luck in your PLAB 1

Approaching the PLAB 2
Once you pass your PLAB 1, first congrats, and you should now start to prepare for real work to clear this step. And honestly most of the people including mine get confused of what to do to approach such a clinical exam "OSCE" but I hope the next points can make it a little more clear of what do and how to prepare
You need to know that this exam was structured to test your ability of how to practice medicine with a British patient and to be a safe doctor. It doesn't test your knowledge at all as it's previously tested in the PLAB 1
The exam is about how to deal with a patient with dignity and your communication skills matters the most
You'll be examined on manikins and on simulators, so most of the exam is about acting. Yeah, ACTING well will get you a pass. A smile on the face, social courtesy, eye contacts and being gentle with the patients are just samples of what's needed
The easiest way to fail is to study alone, so please try to find a study partner to practice with even online on skype as you just need to read the station then one acts the doctor and the other is the patient
Use a pillow in case you don't find, imaginary examiner you should be presenting to, can be anyone of your friends or family. So read the stations then practice and later on use a stop watch to coincide your performance with the time "4.5 mins and the bell rang so you know you have 30 seconds left"
I think it's a must to attend any preparation courses either in London or Manchester. I personally attended SWAMY plab trainer in Ilford, London. The course is 10 days from 9am – 5pm. It's really intense and helpful to get in the exam mood and the trainers are past
PLAB passers with a lot of helpful tips of how the British patient
thinks, layman language lexis and what examiner expect. Beside they have all the manikins like what you'll be examined on so you can practice there even when you finish the course before the night of the exam
Mock tests at those courses are of much help so you can attend it to evaluate your performance and improve it
Ideally you should attend the course 2 months before the exam, then you continue practicing home and in the center till your exam day. My exam was in London but now it's transferred to Manchester so maybe you might find it appropriate to attend the course there but I really don't know about the centers there and don't have any experience with it, so if anyone else you know been there so that's fine, go for it. Try to find what suits you
My best source was SWAMY notes; it has everything and all the tips not like the books. Another book which is good is called London PLAB which is really hard to find online.. so try to find it on ebay or contact one of the people who passed to buy it from him
A glimpse on the exam it comprises of 4 main parts. History taking, counseling, examination and practical procedures on manikins
History taking and counseling entails topics of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, gyne and paediatrics
Clinical examination "medical, surgical, orthopedics, gyne on manikins and ATLS"
Clinical procedures on manikins as wound suturing, male urinary catheterization, ABG, blood samples, venous cannulations, otoscopic examinations, ophthalmoscopic examination, CPR and vaginal smear "not all but just examples"
To pass the exam you have to pass in 9 out 14 stations and in the same time to pass in a total score based on the all stations. It's kinda complicated so you might read more about it in GMC website in the plab 2 section. You will be examined on 16 stations "with 2 pilot stations that doesn't count in your marks but it's made for the future exams and you never know it inside, but usually you can anticipate it when you encounter a totally new stations you never read about it"
Get ready, neat and sleep well before the exam. In the exam day you'll be nicely guided and usually there are 3 rounds in the day.. so they can tell you to arrive at 9 am but your exam will start at 2 pm, so be prepared with some snacks though they offer lunch
In the exam, you usually take 30 seconds outside the door to read what's needed in the station. BEWARE, you fail the station on the door. If you don't understand what you are going to do exactly you can easily mess it up. So in case you didn't read well, so you can politely ask for a second a look on another paper inside of what's needed after greeting your examiner and introducing yourself. Just be calm, most of stations you can finish it in time
Wishing you all best of luck in your part 2
