Dermatology CD In Primary Care
A Mutlimedia CME Program
Introduction
Many primary care physicians are
finding dermatological conditions to be a major diagnostic and clinical
challenge. Research indicates that at least half of the patients with
skin conditions are seen by non-dermatologists, mainly primary care
physicians.
Referral to specialist care is increasingly restricted by health
insurance organizations, and by the prohibitive growth of health
budgets. Primary care physicians generally encounter a spectrum of
diseases different than those treated by dermatologists. The goal of
Dermatology in Primary Care is to acquaint the physician with the
principal disorders seen in primary care by using a systematic approach:
relevant history taking, recognition of skin lesions, distribution and
arrangement, practical differential diagnosis, and a rational approach
to therapy.
The unique structure of Dermatology in Primary Care is a simulation of a
teaching hospital in which medical knowledge is acquired through
different learning environments. We had several working hypotheses in
developing this program:
1. Primary care physicians would benefit from a synopsis of facts
relevant to their daily practice.
2. Most physicians are not thoroughly computer literate, so we designed
simple and friendly interfaces.
3. The new technologies of multimedia can offer accelerated learning,
combining interactive and stimulating teaching.
Dermatology in Primary Care represents a combined effort of its authors,
editors, reviewers, software developers, graphic artists, narrators,
sound technicians, video photographers, and product managers. We are
grateful to all of them.
We would also like to acknowledge the special contribution of Prof. J.
Medalie (Cleveland, Ohio) and Prof. M. David (Tel-Aviv, Israel). We
thank them for their help and encouragement.
